Tie-dyed Shirtdress

Description

I live in a city where people can and do tie-dye everything, including toilet paper. Alas, it seems that I've given in to my hippie roots.

I dyed the fabric last summer, with the intent that it would be black and navy and resemble some of the old Japanese indigo fabrics. Rit dye thwarted me there, but I think the lighter colors are probably better on me anyway. I made four yards of it, but it wasn't quite enough to have all of the pattern match up properly on the dress. Hence the front of the skirt. Not much to be done about that, though... I'll just have to make five yards next time. I used plain ol' muslin, and it's fantastically soft after all of the abuse it suffered in the dye process.

Anyway, I figured I'd better do something with it while tie dye is still fashionable. And what better than a shirt dress?

O_o Muslin? Oh dang, I have to remember that! How much do you have to theortetically 'kill' the muslin to make it soft?

(In my theater class, we use huge sheets of muslin as drop cloths to stop paint. I had to fold up every day during painting days and from what I know off the top of my head, it's like an elephant skin with ephazema.)
