Artist's Comments

Ladies and gentlemen—My flag and my anthem. Also the first piece in my intended Full Regalia line. I've yet to make labels, but it's going to happen.

I prefer hand embroidery to machine embroidery, absolutely hands-down. It just looks better. And by "better" I mean "more expensive." And you know how I like to play like I've got money. Hence, I spent probably around 30 hours on the neckline alone. Things will take as long as they take, though, and cutting time isn't worth compromising style.

I started this back over winter break, but have only been able to work a bit on it here and there since school started up again. Few things feel as inherently correct as embroidering in winter. My little Bohemian heart almost burst with glee when I finally finished it last night... I would go about dressed like that all of the time if I could get away with it. It feels fierce somehow, wearing your insides out. A powerful thing, that.

All cotton; designed, patterned, and constructed by me.

jeezub woman! That's A LOT of work! and it looks so good! hehe, I prefer machine over hand just because I'm not that skilled at making it look so good and because there are some things I don't want to take the time to do :D

Oh Man! this is great! (aside from the dedication it needs to do that much embroidery) The style is adorable and it fits perfectly (which is so the biggest plus of making your own clothes. They fit better than everyone elses) I love the ethnic feelign I get from this.

Did you sew and then do the embroidery or the other way around?

Thank you!

Yes and no on the embroidery question. The leaves on the neckline I did before putting it all together, but the rest of the trim I did after it was assembled. Some of it I did before the whole thing was together, like the trim around the sleeves, so there wasn't as much extra fabric to deal with. I think I did everything but the waist trim before I put the skirt on... Also, I don't know if it's "legit," but I stenciled the leaves in acrylic paint before embroidering them, and doing that makes the fabric stiff enough that you don't need to use an embroidery hoop. Makes things a lot easier.

Hey, patience is a virtue. Hahaha. Embroidery frustrated me to no end when I was little, but I guess I've since developed hand-eye coordination or something. It's not half as hard as I remembered it being.

Aye, I know how that is. Stuff I wouldn't have bothered with years ago I do now without thinking about it.

The paint in an interesting Idea. Did you do the stenciling in the gold? Was it hard to sew through the paint?
